Researching into Ralph Lauren

Daisy Jackson / 27/01/2023

As part of research, I am researching into Ralph Lauren. This is one out of the two brands I will be focusing on to redesign the packaging.

Looking into Ralph Lauren origin and logo:

This shows that Ralph Lauren was started due to the love Ralph Lauren had with sports. This brought out his passions in his own brand.

This shows that the diea behind Ralph Lauren represents freedom, spirit, strength, loyalty and courage. This translates to the clothing and makes the consumers possibly feel more powerful when wearing the brand. To me this is also a way of showing higher prestige as when you are seen with expensive clothing, you feel more powerful and strong.

Ralph Lauren offers a slightly cheaper alternative despite being a higher end luxury brand. Despite the luxury behind the brand, Ralph Lauren makes you want to be seen and feel more relaxed and casual. This contrasts and compliments the expensive materials used and the higher end look.

Looking at Ralph Lauren's beliefs regarding sustainability:

These goals fit well with the 17 goals of sustainability as shown below:

After this, I wanted to dive in deeper to see exactly how Ralph Lauren achieve this. I downloaded their sustainability report.

Here are a few important snippets taken from the sustainability report:

In this report, Ralph Lauren highlughts how they work with the Soil Health institute which has created the U.S. Representative Cotton Fund.

This shows that Ralph Lauren has a positive impact on soil health. The cotton produced for the clothing items improve cotton producers' livelihoods and have a positive impact on the future.

This could be something advertised on the packaging as I had no idea that Ralph Lauren did this until researching further into the brand!

Despite only 77% of units produced reached one of Ralph Lauren's sustainable material criteria, this is amazing as in 2021, this percentage was only 33%. This shows that each year they set new goals and are constantly improving and are trying to figure out new methods and partnerships.

Summing this information up, Ralph Lauren focuses on the wellbeing of animals and their treatment. By using responsible down standard, it ensures positive treatement of animals such as ducks and geese which then rewards 'organisations leading the way'.

The new 'MIRUM' materal, is plant based and is better for the environment. Despite not being completely animal free products, this shows that this will eventually happen as we are discovering more and more alternative materials. This can attract more customers if they know animals are not involved in the products.

From my calculations, roughly 4% (rounding up from 3.9%) of materials are animal derived. 80.7% of materials are cotton. Cotton not being great for the environment, is not the greatest for sustainability, however, Ralph Lauren's partnership with the U.S. Regenerative Soil institute helps this as it is a more suitable way of producing and obtaining cotton.

As part of one of the 17 goals by United Nations, partnerships are crucial to making the environment a better place. Ralph Lauren have many partnerships like so:

Working with WWF is a very interesting one to me as this shows that Ralph Lauren focus on animals and protecting them as well as making sure the materials they use are protecting habitats and the animals living in them.

Water footprint is vital within the environment and enforcing sustainability. Ralph Lauren are setting themselves several goals by 2025 to make sure their water consumption is not as high and is reasonably sourced.

Equality is important especially when working under particular conditions. The staff should be respected and feel safe in their environment. This is why Ralph Lauren accepts all individuals and focuses on diversity and gender equality. An important part of sustainability which could be focused on more within the packaging - a healthy promotion!

Here are the sustainability goals that Ralph Lauren achieves:

My overall thoughts?

I am very happy with the values of Ralph Lauren regarding sustainability. The brand focuses on the 17 goals of sustainability and has even bigger goals for the year after. Ralph Lauren is constantly trying to improve these figures.

My next plan of action will be looking into product's packaging by Ralph Lauren and figuring out how to alter these to be more sustainable. It would also be great to promote the brand's actions on achieving the goals of sustainaability as this would have a positive effect on the packaging and how Ralph Lauren is portrayed by customers and outsiders.
